Carol Macht, FASLA, a founding partner of Hord Coplan Macht (HCM), will retire from the firm at the end of 2020, though she will continue to consult on some ongoing and select projects. Macht, a landscape architect, along with architects Lee Coplan and Ed Hord, founded Hord Coplan Macht in 1977. Since that time, the firm has grown to a nationally recognized, award-winning, multidisciplinary practice with 300 employees in four offices. Among her highly visible projects, Macht has developed landscape master plans and completed numerous design projects for Loyola University Maryland and Washington College in Chestertown, MD. She led her team in the award-winning design of the major renovation of the historic South Capitol Park at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg, PA; the West Shore Park at Baltimore's Inner Harbor with Thomas Balsley Associates; several gardens at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore; and dozens of private residences. Additionally, she has led the landscape master planning and design associated with the repositioning and new addition program at Roland Park Place in Baltimore.

INITIAL RESPONSE
INITIAL RESPONSE is a sculptural installation comprised of 14 pairs of cast aluminum pregnant torsos. These can occupy space in different configurations and thus create a unique correspondence to each other and dynamic meanings to viewers. In this multi-part installation, each piece is made to resemble a capsule or eggshell with both the front and back torsos wrapped around a single letter from a discarded sign. The human forms express a variety of emotional gestures while the letters act as an initial – individuality to be birthed and a path coming into being. Letters signify ideas and emotions, elicit connotations, and swirl in the ways we use and think of language.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE
ARC DE TRIOMPHE is a nine-foot high arch composed of 13 unique body molds made from pregnant women and cast in aluminum. These molds were collected over 20+ years where friends, often dancers, volunteered to have a mold made of their body as it was in transformation. To connect each fragmented form into a single movement, they are brought into an arch using long bolts. Supporting itself in balance, the arch inquires into the nature of vulnerability and projects the sensations of flight and movement. Several torsos reveal small drilled openings which have been stitched with bright orange ribbon and a variety of colored pantyhose wave as triumphant flags.

Perci Chester’s latest series BODY OF WORK speaks to birth, motherhood, and the universal experience of way-finding and place-making within the development of individuality and human agency. With a unique coordination of materials and sculptural strategies, this series seeks to challenge convention and playfully engage viewers with two large-scale installations.

Her work has been exhibited extensively and is represented in numerous private and public collections. She is the recipient of public commissions for large-scale outdoor works in the United States and abroad.

Works by Ian Weaver have been acquired by two institutional collections as part of a bequest by Peggy Cooper Cafritz, a trailblazer in the arts and education. Map of Black Bottom Community as a Black Panther is now a part of the collection of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Black Power Helmet (pictured here) was acquired by the the Studio Museum of Harlem. Weaver is an assistant professor of art at St. Mary's College and a 2017 recipient of the Sam Fox School's Stone & DeGuire Contemporary Art Award.

Architect and urban planner Peter Green has published a new mystery novel, Chicago's Designs, part of his Patrick MacKenna series. The novel is available for purchase through Amazon. In addition to his Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Green also earned a creative writing certificate from WashU.

JENSEN Architects has promoted Yusheen Yang to senior designer. Yang joined JENSEN in 2014, bringing a background in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. With experience ranging from urban residences to public spaces to large-scale overseas developments, Yang approaches each project with an eye toward architecture’s role in shaping our environment—and society—as well as an appreciation of the thoughtful details that distinguish good design. She graduated from University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Architecture, then worked in New York City before earning her Master of Urban Design from Washington University in St. Louis.

On April 18, 2019, the Nevada Humanities, a nonprofit state council affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities, presented the Humanities Rising Star Award to Mark Salinas. Eleven recipients from the Silver State received a 2019 Nevada Humanities Award, which recognizes the achievement of “extraordinary individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to Nevada’s communities using the tools of the humanities to strengthen and enhance the lives of the people of Nevada. Within the past year, the Carson City Department of Arts & Culture, established by Salinas, was also awarded a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. The Big Read Grant was only awarded to one recipient in Nevada, and it provided for 30 days of creative community programming based upon themes found in an American novel. Salinas, in partnering with the Nevada State Museum and the Carson City Library, selected Charles Portis’ True Grit. The Carson City Chamber of Commerce named the project the "Best Event in 2018." Nancy Paulson, City Manager of Carson City, welcomes the heightened state and national arts awareness to Nevada’s rural capital. “This recognition promotes quality of life, downtown vitality, and community pride,” she said. “Carson City is fortunate to have Mark Salinas leading the charge in putting Carson City’s mark on the state and national arts scene.”
